INCLUSION: City councillor Pauline Cotter wants the Edgeware Master Plan to be included in Regenerate Christchurch.

Call to include Edgeware in plan JACK PRICE

Moves are being made to include Edgeware in the Regenerate Christchurch, alongside New Brighton because it too is struggling with earthquake recovery. The Shirley-Papanui Community Board, led by city councillor Pauline Cotter is lobbying to get the Edgeware Master Plan included in Regenerate Christchurch. Regenerate Christchurch will replace the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority in April next year. It will be a joint operation between the Crown and city council. It is tasked with enhancement of the central city, residential red

But Cr Cotter said Edgeware has suffered a “similar degree of hardship” post-earthquakes like New Brighton and should also be included. She said funding for the Edge-

Including it in Regenerate Christchurch would speed up development and allow more community say on the Edgeware Village Master Plan. The Edgeware Village Master Plan outlines future developments around Edgeware Rd, and was drafted after consultation with residents and business owners. “If we don’t ask, we don’t get, and if we can ask to be included, that could be enabling,” Cr Cotter said. She said New Brighton’s inclusion earlier in the year, “probably sparked the idea” and that

trying to get the plan into Regenerate Christchurch was worth trying. Cr Cotter said if Edgeware was to be included in Regenerate Christchurch, it could spark other boards to get their master plans included too. Shirley-Papanui Community Board chairman Mike Davidson said the board was supportive of the plan and would be recommending it to the city council. Edgeware Business Association president Malcolm Pearce said anything that supports having more public consultation would benefit the local area. However, he would have to see more detail before fully backing the Cr Cotter’s proposal.

We ratepayers can’t afford the Government’s wish list of $500 million worth of convention centres and stadiums. We were then told to sell financially viable assets. I don’t believe we have had sufficient financially backing but even worse for the last five years, our papers have been inundated with Cantabrians battling EQC. The Government has sat back and allowed EQC to crucify our people. Add this to the reviews that have shown thousands of repairs are substandard. In the meantime, more than $300 million of EQC money was handed back to the Government to bring their books into surplus. It was sad to see therefore, on October 23, our recovery will continue to be led from the Beehive, a minister-led future for Christchurch through to 2021.

Have your say Should Kendal Ave School become a community hub similar to Phillipstown? Email your thoughts to andrew.king@starmedia.kiwi

ANDREW KING

It has been a year since Kendal School closed and community leaders say the site is being under utilised. The school was axed under the Government’s 2013 education shake up but is still being used by the Blind and Low Vision Education Network of New Zealand. The high remediation cost, low roll and roll decline and the ability for learners to be absorbed by five schools located close by were key elements behind the closure of the school. Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board chairwoman Val Carter was happy that it is still getting used by BLENNZ but would like to see the space fully utilised. “They could find lots of groups to use it especially with the gap left by the Bishopdale Library,” she said. Phillipstown School was also closed last year however, residents in the area took ownership of the space making it a communityorientated hub. Board member Sally Buck was a big supporter of turning the old Kendal School site into a com-

munity hub similar to the one in Phillipstown. “The Ministry of Education should consult the community on this one,” she said. “It doesn’t have to be a permanent thing, but it is good idea for the meantime.” Ministry of Education head of education infrastructure services Kim Shannon would not say if it had planned to replicate the successful Phillipstown hub at the site. “Given that the site formerly used by Kendal School is currently occupied, there are no current plans to turn this site into a community hub,” she said.

Phillipstown Community Hub co-ordinator Lauren Luketina said it was a fantastic way for the community to have a space to use for activities. “We can’t fit everybody in, there is more demand than we can handle,” she said. Ms Shannon said it would be holding onto the school at least until the end of the Christchurch Schools Rebuild programme scheduled to be completed by 2022. “If, in the future, we decide that the site is no longer needed for educational purposes, we would follow the process set down by the Public Works Act 1981.”

So get writing and email andrew.king@ starmedia.kiwi and you may see your letter in the Nor’West News. NEW ROAD NAME Fendall Lane has been approved as a name in a subdivision off Fendalton Rd. It will pay tribute to Walpole Fendall who subdivided his land to create what is known today as Fendalton. The applicant submitted six names – The Stables Lane, Riverbank Lane, River Lane, Otakaro Lane, Bridge Lane or Fendall Lane. All the names would have been suitable for the location, but the Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board said all are in existence in other parts of the city. The subdivision will create seven new properties. DONATIONS WANTED Harcourts Holmwood is getting behind the Christ-

church City Mission this Christmas, seeking donations of non-perishable food, blankets and toiletries. Chief executive Tony Jenkins said the office will be making its own donations to the mission and has encouraged others to follow suit. Harcourts Holmwood has established collection depots at 397 and 407 Ilam Rd, 74 Edgeware Rd, 51 Holmwood Rd and 175 Papanui Rd for donation of goods by Wednesday (December 9). News tips? Email andrew.king@starmedia.kiwi or phone 371 0777

ANDREW KING

While flood remediation work is ongoing at Dudley Creek, authorities have made sure eels have not gone with out a home. Eel caves have been created by using curved pieces of pipe (right) by the city council contractors mimicking the dark places where they like to hide. Rocks will also be used to create small overhangs for other aquatic life. The area in Shirley has been hit with widespread flooding since the February 2011 earthquake. The city council has a $25 million programme to deal with the issue. Work is about 50 per cent completed and has now moved from the southern side of Shirley Rd to the northern side. Contractors have removed trees and vegetation on the north side of Dudley Creek between Slater St and Stapletons Rd, to enable the re-shaping of the creek’s channel and banks. Seating and footpath were also removed. Work in the first section

involved setting up a small dam and de-watering pumps to reduce the water level in the creek. Drying out the creek bed gives the team space in the creek to shape the banks. Fish and eels were removed and relocated before the water level was reduced, and pipes have been laid along the dry section to maintain the creek flow. Work is now focusing on building the new creek edge. The next step is to build the “fresh plain”, or terraced area planted with shrubs. This accommodates the higher water levels and reduces the flood risk. Once this is completed the team will then move east toward Chancellor St, and start the dewatering process there.

SPEED TEST: Police at Celebrate Bishopdale used their speed gun to find out who could run the fastest.

Celebrate Bishopdale bigger and better

The wind died down and sun started to shine as the Celebrate Bishopdale community festival rolled around for another year. The event was held at Bishopdale Park and featured a variety of market, information and food stalls as well as free activities for the kids. Stage performances throughout the day included the kapa haka groups from Isleworth School and Breens Intermediate, the Nor’west Brass Band, Women in Harmony and old

time dancing from the Riccarton Dance Club. The local community constables were also at the event and there was a steady queue all day of people waiting to have their running speed tested by the police laser. The event was organised by the Bishopdale Community Trust in partnership with the city council and was funded by the Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board. Board chairwoman Val Carter said: “This is the third year we

have held this event and it gets bigger and better each year. “It’s great to see so many local families coming along to enjoy a day out.” Trust community development worker Tania Smith was thrilled with the turnout and was grateful for the way so many groups from Bishopdale were willing to participate in the event. “It is a great opportunity for local groups to promote their activities to local residents” she said.

Cequent Projects in charge of Bishopdale facility ANDREW KING

A consultant has been appointed for the Bishopdale Library and Community Centre project. Cequent Projects will undertake the development and design work for the new centre, which will be built on the former site of the Bishopdale Community Preschool. The original library was damaged beyond repair in the February 2011 earthquake. The $4m facility will have a combined library and community hall joined by an atrium with decks. Construction is scheduled to begin in June 2016 and the new library and community centre to be ready to open to the public by mid 2017. The Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board signed off the concept plan in September allowing the resource consent to be applied for and consultant to be appointed. Board chairwoman Val Carter said the old library was one of the most well used community facilities in the city. “Before the earthquakes this

was one of the busiest community centres in the city so it has been really missed.” She thought that once the new facility up and running the community groups that used the old library would flood back. “The community groups have been dispersed all around the city,” she said.

Two people were taken to hospital after a crash at a notorious St Albans intersection. Two cars collided at the corner of Roosevelt Ave and Malvern St sending a vehicle onto its roof around 9.50am on Tuesday. Four others were treated for minor injuries at the scene. It is alleged that a car travelling north along Roosevelt Ave failed to give way to a SUV vehicle heading west on Malvern St. The intersection is known as a black spot with a $55,000 upgrade to make it safer approved

by the Shirley-Papanui Community Board last month. Over a five-year period there have been eight crashes at the intersection – two serious, three minor and three non-injury – not including the one last week, making it the worst residential intersection in the Shirley-Papanui ward. A city council report showed that 90 per cent of the crashes are caused by north-bound traffic. Santa Claus

Santa gears up for festive fever It is all hustle and bustle up in the North Pole with Christmas preparations well under way. But Santa Claus thought he’d make a stop at Northlands Shopping Centre. Georgia O’ConnorHarding speaks to him about his favorite song, what he wants for Christmas and which toy is all the rage with the children this year Hello Santa! It is so exciting to talk to you. I’ve always wanted to know, what is your favorite Christmas tune? I like a lot of them but if I had to choose . . . what’s the name of the dog? Snoopy’s Christmas. I love that song too. How are preparations for the big trip around the world going? Well we are getting all the orders in, all the mail with the requests. And we are just making sure the sleigh is big enough to carry everything. We are making sure the reindeer are well fed. I’ve also got my GPS all set to go.

Nice, I was wondering how do you fit all your presents in one sleigh? It’s a real mystery isn’t it? We get there though. Very good, because many of us are wondering, how do you travel around the whole world in one night? With great difficulty sometimes, but every year we always seem to make it through. It is all go. You see on the television they keep a report on where I am in every country. It is all broadcast to the kids.

What toy is in hot demand this year? The minions. It’s a new thing out and is the flavour of the month. I think the iPads were all out last year so the kids don’t want them anymore. They want something new. Ah, the minions. Do the children want big cuddly toy minions or what’s the story there? There are games, books, stuffed toys. A big variety. And apparently there is a shortage in the very well-loved LEGO toy collection this year. How have you and your elves got round that? Well, there has only been one request so far this year for them. And the boy said just any LEGO. There is a variety of requests but there doesn’t seem to be a lot. I usually get the first bookings. I already have the new Star Wars LEGO collection that has just come out booked. What is your HO HO HO: Santa Claus has arrived and is favorite getting all geared up for his big Christmas toy to trip around the world. make?

Boats are my thing. I’ve done a bit of building and sailing in my time. When you go to deliver these toys all over the world, I imagine there are always a few hiccups along the way. What do you do if someone doesn’t have a chimney to go down? Well it’s a bit of problem these days with modern houses, none of them have got chimneys. We have to improvise but usually they leave a window open for us. Or the garage door sometimes if it is a big parcel they are expecting. When you come down the chimney, what sort of treats are you looking to find this year? I would like a bit of Christmas cake and an orange juice. Any treat that is just off limits? Yes. I don’t like alcohol unfortunately but as long as it is Christmas cake and orange juice I am very happy. I cannot forget to ask, how is Rudolf the red-nosed reindeer doing? Will he be flying this year? Yes, he’s all checked out ready to go. He has had his medical test. So far his light is flashing all right. Which list is bigger? The naughty or nice list? The nice list is well and truly bigger than the naughty list. There are only a few naughty ones. Haven’t struck any just of late. Have you had a lot of children come and visit you here? Yes, I have had a few and they are all quite nice. Very polite and they all say “thank you’’ when I give them a gift. That is great to hear, I would like to know, what is the most interesting request you have had? Let’s see. I have had a lot of them. One of the sad ones was a brother and sister. They were about 18 and they wanted their mother to come back home from Auckland and live with them.

Apparently she did a runner. And you get the odd kids that ask for happy families over Christmas. And one child yesterday wrote a note saying he wants his present to go to a child in Fiji who doesn’t get presents. So you see quite a few like that. I think one of the unusual ones was a woman come in and asked if she could have a baby. What did you say to that? I was stuck for words. You must get a few interesting ones through. Yes, and the oldest one that came to see me was a 93-yearold and asked me for some nice new clothes. The youngest was about eight-hours-old. Straight from the hospital to me. Do you ever get tired from this Christmas business? Where do you like to go on holiday? Yes, on Boxing Day I like to put my feet up in the sun somewhere away from the North Pole. It’s too cold up there. I like the Bahamas or the Caribbean. As far as you can go from the ice. Are you concerned about climate change? Yes, we are noticing it a bit up there. We are concerned we might not have any snow or ice up there which will spoil our image. Will you get any presents this year Santa? Ooh I don’t know. Hopefully the elves and Mrs Claus will give me something. It’s like the kids– they don’t know what they are getting either. What would you like for Christmas? It’s time we got a new sleigh. The old one is getting a bit tattered. It’s been around for a few years. Finally, do you have a special message for the children? Yes, just be happy during the holiday period. Treat family and friends with kindness and they will treat you the same.

Kids get competitive growing potatoes

your

LOCAL

Prams, scooters, sack barrows and big buckets were seen barrelling into Cotswold School for the annual potato growing competition. There was a great response this year with over 160 pupils entering. So they didn’t feel left out, Cotswold residents had their own competition, with 34 individuals and groups entering. In early September students and community entrants were given a seed potato and bag to take home. All the hard work paid off as large plastic bags were tipped out, soil brushed aside and lots of little potatoes were

revealed. Aratupu Preschool and Nursery entered this year’s potato growing competition with their under twos looking after one potato plant and the over twos tending another plant. The preschool children enjoyed looking after the potatoes and the four year old’s came to the school on the morning of the weigh-in to see how well their plants had done. The under twos had 108gm of potatoes and the over twos had 302gm of potatoes. The winners from Cotswold School were Zac and Adam Hickling – twins in year 3 with potato plants weighing 751gm each.

SETTING SAIL: Harewood School pupils cast off for a day of adventure on the water last week. Year 5 and 6 students spend the day at Lake Rua, near Johns Rd in Harewood. A week before, they had a land based session with the sailing school to learn the parts of a boat so they are ready to put it into action when they go. Some of the students were hesitant at first but the combination of Lake Rua and the tutors giving plenty of encouragement that they are soon all out mastering the art.

Teacher Mrs Diehl weighed Zac and Adam’s potatoes twice, and then again to see if one bag would weigh just that one gram more to determine a winner. But after three attempts to separate the two it was decided to call it a tie with both boys winning first place. They will be sharing first and second prize. Sienna Fox was third with 673gm of potatoes. Bob Sandford was the winner in community competition with 624gm. Only 4gm more than second placed Chris Savage with 620gm. Tracy Hickling came third with 560gm of potatoes.

SPUDS: Cotswold School held its annual potato growing competition with the weigh-in last week.

Learning to survive at school

The theme this year was Survivor with middle school students making up tribes that appointed leaders with tribal names, banners and bandanas. The students set up websites for their tribes, produced video blogs and released news reports throughout the week. Head of middle school Kathryn Gray said: “To gain points for their tribe, the girls participated in challenges ranging from building shelters, mathematics and language challenges, making masks, forming sculptures inspired by Andy Goldworthy art. “There were also survival skills such as purifyTRIBAL DANCE: St Margaret’s College ‘tribes’ went face ing water and using solar ovens.” Special Week culminated last Friday with a to face against each other in a dance battle as part of its special week. hangi and a display.

Powerful voices get messages across CHRISTMAS COMPETITION: Wairakei School has decorated its Christmas tree that will be entered in the 12 Schools of Christmas competition held at Christchurch International Airport. The airport put out the call for 12 primary schools to help make its terminal even more special for the Christmas season. A team effort went into making the decorations, coming together to write down some fantastic Christmas stories and the putting together of the tree. Each school in the event will also get to showcase a lunchtime performance in the terminal - a short play, musical item or kapa haka. All 12 schools which decorate a tree and give a performance will receive a Christmas gift from the airport of $1000.

Graffiti, drugs and bullies are out. But more smiles, colourful gardens and being nicer to your neighbours are in. Mairehau Primary School pupils have embarked on a large “Photovoice” project to chronicle what things they would like to see more of, and what they could do without. The photography is part of The Mairehau Neighbourhood Project, led by the Neighbour-

hood Trust, Te Ora Hou Aotearoa and Kingdom Resources. It aims to make Mairehau and Shirley a great place to raise children and to do this, parents told the project team they needed to hear from young people themselves. “This is an opportunity for children to have their voices heard – in the rebuild children’s voice are quite absent,” said trust manager and new projects

About 140 photos were taken with the final 13 whittled down to be on display at Shirley Library for about two months. “It is a powerful way of getting across messages,” said Ms Larsen.

Civic Award for heritage work ANDREW KING

A Mairehau resident who has fought to preserve the city’s heritage buildings post-earthquakes has been recognised with a Civic Award. Anna Crighton also a Canterbury District Health Board member, won a Christchurch Civic Award on Tuesday. Ms Crighton was honoured to get the award and said listening to what the others had achieved allowed her to get to know her city a bit better. “I was very excited about it. It is quite rewarding to be recognised by your own city for the work you have been doing for the last 25 to 30 years,” she said. Three other north-west residents also won awards: Ian Beswick, Francis Blandford and David Ivory. Bryndwr resident Mr Beswick won an award for his services to the performing arts and said it was great to chat with others

who had won. “I think it is a real honour really, you put a lot of work in over a number of years and it is nice to be recognised,” he said. Fendalton resident Mr Ivory’s dedication to education earned him the award. “It was great and very humbling to receive a city council Civic Award,” he said. Strowan resident and anti-tag-

ging crusader Mr Blandford won for his commitment to community service. The annual awards recognise significant service individuals and groups have given to benefit the Christchurch community. This service can be across a range of areas including recreation, social welfare, youth activities, education, cultural, religious or community affairs.

Recipients were nominated by members of the public with winners selected by the awards subcommittee. City councillor Yani Johanson is chairman of the committee who selects the winners and was pleased to be able to recognise the outstanding work groups and individuals do to make Christchurch a better place to live.

Mayor Lianne Dalziel presented the awards and said it was an event she absolutely loves to attend. “The Civic Awards are top of the list because they’re our opportunity to acknowledge the people who represent the highest level of commitment to their communities and their city.”

Unsung heroes recognised ANDREW KING

One of the first firefighters on the scene of the collapsed CTV building after the February 2011 earthquake has won a local hero award. St Albans resident Keith Norton was one of six Canterbury firefighters and Urban Search and Rescue to be deployed to assist with recovery work after the earthquake. He was also one of the first to the tragic collapse that claimed the lives of 115. For his efforts and as one of the first members when USAR was founded he has been awarded a Kiwibank Local Hero award. He also assisted with the Japanese earthquake and tsunami events in March 2011. Mr Norton has also been in the Fire Service for 38 years. He was unable to attend the event as he was overseas doing charity work, so his son, Jonathan Norton, accepted the medal for him.

PROUD SON: Jonathan Norton accepted his father’s local hero award.

During his time as a firefighter he has been the president of the Christchurch Firefighters Social Club for 10 years and coach/manager of the Canterbury Fire Brigade Rugby Team for 30 years. Mike Coleman, Nigel Thompson and Graham Pugh were also presented with medals in recognition for their outstanding dedication to their communities. Mairehau resident Reverend Mike Coleman was honoured

Mike Coleman for standing up for the rights of residents in earthquake-related issues through his role with WeCan, the Wider Earthquake Communities’ Action Network. Born in Burwood, he was a teacher at Linwood College, St Bede’s College and Middleton Grange. He has also been a minister at North Avon Baptist, Delta Trust and St Ambrose, Ambrosia Empowerment, Aranui and St Mary’s Anglican parishes as well as being a counsellor at Middleton Grange and Aidanfield Christian schools. Proud Papanui resident Mr

Nigel Thompson Thompson was presented a medal for his work with the Papanui Tigers Rugby League. He has been both manager and a major sponsor. Mr Thompson purchased playing apparel and engaged with past players and their families to restore a sense of family and tradition to the club. Last but not least, Burnside stalwart Mr Pugh was honoured for his work as the “after-hours caretaker” for Kendal Primary School. When the school closed at the end of 2013, Mr Pugh took it upon himself to keep the

Graham Pugh facilities in a presentable state – maintaining the shrubs and gardens and keeping pressure on the property management firm to repair any damage. Mr Pugh has also become a ‘guardian of the streets’ through patrolling the neighbourhood in the evenings and his contribution has made a safer, cleaner, more pleasant community for the residents of Burnside. All national finalists will attend the New Zealander of the Year Awards Gala where one will be named the 2016 Kiwibank New Zealand Local Hero of the Year in February.

Bunnings Warehouse helps its fine-feathered friends ANDREW KING

Not only did a building company donate material to help out a Northwood bird hospital – they rolled up their sleeves and helped complete the project too. The South Island Wildlife Hospital was visited by 15 Bunnings Warehouse leadership team members with paint in hand to get to work on the aviaries last Wednesday. The aviaries, built by the hospital’s builder Robin Frost over the last six months, were painted top to bottom by the crew. The team sweated it out for three hours in 33 deg C heat to

complete the project. The company has a policy that they not only donate goods to the community but get their staff out doing the work too. Hospital volunteer Angela Tranter was delighted to receive the help. “Not only do we not have to fundraise the money to pay for the paint and equipment which would take time, we would then have to paint the place ourselves,” she said. “If we had to do this with our own volunteers, it would be months before it was completed.” Bunnings regional manager Matt Jung (right) was happy to help out.

“It’s amazing to see what a difference can be made with just a few hours’ work,” he said. Having completed aviaries means more birds can be housed on-site, particularly at their next stage of recovery after initial treatment. Ms Tranter said it was a great way to cap off the year. “Our vet Pauline is thrilled with the result,” she said.

LEADING FROM THE FRONT: The Bunnings Warehouse leadership team helped complete the aviaries at the South Island Wildlife Hospital.

Flame files

Face consequences of arson THE FLAME FILES BY MARK THOMAS – FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER

Last week saw three separate incidents where offenders for arson fires were identified. All three were different. But in common with all is the fact that the lives of those responsible have been changed forever. Being convicted of arson can result in any one of a raft of consequences, from extensive jail time to finding you’re denied entry to many countries because of the conviction.

Arson is quite a difficult charge to prove and this may be a reason those that are convicted are often dealt with quite severely. While the person who is fascinated by fire, or by fire trucks, or who wants to lift the finger to the world, probably thinks little of the result should they get caught, that result can be monumental. A fire that caused quite a bit of damage in a house in Wainoni Rd last week was the result of butter being left on the stove, igniting and setting the kitchen on fire. It’s just a

further reason that any time the stove top is being used we need to stay in the kitchen. That won’t happen. We’ll continue to be called. People will continue to suffer the consequences. Sad really isn’t it? A pat on the back to St Alban’s crew. Called to a house near the station they found a plumbing problem soaking the elderly occupant’s property. The plumbing was repaired, the water turned back on. No fire, no real emergency, just decent people helping someone in need. It’s what we do. Well done.

The main race is a long course ironman event modelled after the Coolangatta Gold race and was held at Sumner beach on November 28. It involves competitors swimming 500m around Cave Rock, a 1km run to the clock tower, a 1.2km surf board back to Cave Rock, another 1km run to clock tower, a 1.5km ski paddle to Cave rock and then a final 1km run to the finish line.

St Albans resident Mike Phillips has won the Christchurch Casino Elite Cup at the House of Travel Triathlon Festival. The race held at Pegasus on November 29, was a super sprint event which required the 32 athletes to complete a 350m swim, 10km cycle and a 2.5km run twice. The women’s field was given a 9min head start, and the added incentive of staying ahead of the men to win a cash bonus after crossing the finish line. Phillips won with a time of 1hr 4min, 1min ahead of second place Zac Barber. After winning the Queenstown Half Marathon on November 19, Phillips said he was surprised how well his body bounced back. “It was better than I expected after Queenstown and after doing a half ironman at Challenge Shepparton in Australia earlier in November,” he said. After the first cycle leg, Sam Elstob saw his chance to breakaway and gain a small lead over Phillips going into the run. “I was a bit worried after that first run, I wasn’t feeling too flash and had to make sure I hammered the swim and cycle to give myself a decent lead going

motoring Toyota’s Camry covers all bases SPECIFICATIONS

My wife and I landed at Sydney Airport, we were in Australia so that I could watch the rock band Fleetwood Mac perform in concert. We left the terminal building and climbed straight into a taxi to get to our hotel. It was a reasonably late model Camry, and I said to the driver that I was surprised his car wasn’t a hybrid – like the many other Camrys whose drivers were plying for trade at the airport. His response was that he had always driven conventionallypowered cars, and that he was reluctant to make a change. And he said the previous Camry he owned had travelled over 400,000km without any engine or transmission problems. That being the case, he purchased another and was expecting it to give him the same length of service. Our trip to Sydney happened not long after I had been driving a base specification Camry – a Camry GL, to be exact, which lands in New Zealand at an entry-level point of $45,790.

Price: Toyota Camry GL, $45,790. Dimensions: Length,4850mm; width, 1825mm; height, 1470mm. Configuration: Four-cylinder transverse, frontwheel-drive, 2494cc, 133kW, 231Nm, six-speed automatic. Performance: 0-100km/h, 9.3sec.

TOYOTA CAMRY: Large Australian car at an affordable price.

There are seven new Camry models – four without the hybrid system, three with. And the Camry for 2015 onwards is mostly all-new, it has a fresh new body style, although the floorpan is a carry-over. In many of my recent articles I’ve extolled the importance I place on affordable cars within a manufacturing line-up. The Camry GL is no exception, it doesn’t get a lot of the flash stuff of its stablemates, but it does get everything a buyer would want to make motoring safe and comfortable. Under the bonnet sits a 2.5-litre, four-cylinder engine which Toyota rates at 133kW and 231Nm. These are healthy outputs for a 2494cc engine, and are generous enough to offer

spirited acceleration; the conventional and naturally-aspirated Camry will reach 100km/h from a standstill in 9.3sec, it will also complete an overtaking manoeuvre in 5.5sec (80km/h to 120km/h). Response from beneath the accelerator feels spirited, the engine is a quick revving unit which feels strong. And it’s not always easy to get a big fourcylinder unit to work smoothly, yet Toyota have developed this engine over a long period of time, and it is now at a point where it works effectively in terms of power and efficiency. Toyota also claims a 7.8-litre per 100km (36mpg) combined cycle fuel usage rating which fits well with the test car’s trip computer readout. It

was constantly sitting around 8.8l/100km (32mpg) during testing time, along with a 7/100km (40mpg) figure instantaneously at 100km/h, the engine quite relaxed at 1800rpm at that speed. I took the test car on a burst which encompassed the Gebbies Pass incline. Not only is there significant engine power to haul up the hill quickly, the Camry, as in all generations before it, feels confident underneath and directional through the steering. Providing the grip are high quality and quiet Michelin tyres (215/60 x 16in), I’ve always found them to be an odd compound in a car which is built in Australia, but the reality is they have high grip properties and afford strong feedback to the steering wheel.

The Camry GL is softly sprung; well, I don’t think the suspension is much firmer in the Sportivo variants but the point I’m trying to make is that even without low profile tyres and sport suspension parameters, the Camry GL is an accomplished handling car, it has poise and balance, greater than what would normally be expected from a mainstream car. And that is what makes Camry, it is a car for the tasks we ask of a large everyday car, but it also has the ingredients which place it in the upmarket class, or something quite aloof in terms of design if you go for the Sportivo models. I’m sure this won’t be my last Camry drive before the Melbourne factories close in 2017, but if it is, it will serve to prove one thing, that being how well Toyota as a manufacturing company can cover all bases with its product line-up. I don’t expect that philosophy will ever change.

Majestic by name…majestic in design 7 Majestic Lane, Thorrington $839,000

4 bedrooms | 2 bathrooms | 1 living room | 1 dining room | 1 office/study | 2-car garage | Listing #: BE192378

ocated in the heart of Thorrington down exclusive Majestic Lane, this stylish family home is definitely a must-see. A large family kitchen opens onto a roomy dining/family room, which in turn leads into the spacious formal lounge. A private courtyard opening from the living room provides that all important outdoor space for when summer returns. The entrance is grand in size and will surely impress those who call. A double bedroom is located downstairs as is a generously sized powder room. Upstairs, the feeling of space continues with wide landings leading onto the bedrooms. The master suite is bigger than many living rooms with its own walk-in robe and en suite. The second bedroom is also exceedingly generous – more of a triple sized bedroom than a double, in fact! Bedroom three is a double, and there is a study or box room also at this level. Both the main bathroom and en suite have baths as well as separate showers, and are certainly not small. For those whom a garage is important, this will not disappoint. All this situated on an easy-care section, and in zone for the highly sought after Thorrington Primary and Cashmere High. My clients are realistic and want this property to be sold now, so call now to view. Open Home dates: Sunday, December 6 and 13, 2pm to 2.30pm. To arrange a private viewing of this property, call Debbie Pettigrew from Harcourts Grenadier Beckenham (Licensed Agent REAA 2008) now on 337 1316 or 027 777 0411.

s a graduate of our Bachelor of Social Work with an influential role at Child, Youth and Family, you wouldn’t know from looking at 35-year-old Daryl Brougham the long, hard road he’s travelled. Daryl was placed with 79 different foster homes throughout his childhood. He thought his surname was “Foster,” and his life was a spiral of emotional, physical and sexual abuse from so-called “caregivers” – the majority of whom were not approved by social agencies. Adding to the tragedy is his removal from the few families who, looking back, he believes truly cared for him. Take this story and eventually enter into the picture Te Wananga o Aotearoa at our Manukau campus. Through the beatings, abuse and deprivation of his upbringing, Daryl always held hope that the next home would be better, but understandably at times, his behavior reflected the treatment he was receiving. At one point, a social worker said to him, “Daryl, the way you’re going you’re going to end up in jail.” Daryl’s response? “I looked at him and thought, I’m going to become a social worker. And I will do things differently and better.” Our Bachelor in Social Work not only provided him with the skills and qualifications to follow through with

Better education leads to better jobs Many entry level jobs now require education beyond high school.

T

his is an accelerating trend as the world moves increasingly into the digital space and even relatively simple jobs become more complex. A lot of tertiary programmes are single year or even just six months, and give the person a big leap ahead of other candidates for jobs. “We find that employers want proven skills, not just the intention to do the job well,” says Paul Watkins, marketing manager for tertiary education provider Vision College and TrainMe. “For this reason, we have geared our programmes to be very practical and based on industry needs, which we find are changing constantly.”

For lower level programmes, 16 to 19-years-olds can mostly study for free, while older students can access student loans and allowances, meaning that financing the study may not be a big barrier. “Employers don’t train their staff on the job like they used to, with employers seeking proven productivity from day one,” says Watkins. “As a result, we include realworld projects in our web and software programmes, drivers licence and barista in our Level 1 course, and up to 200 hours of centre placement in our Early Childhood programmes. So they don’t learn theory, but demonstrate it.” This is apparent in the changing face of tertiary education across other

providers as well, with the industry having direct involvement in course design. Minister Stephen Joyce wants measurable career outcomes from study

programmes he funds. There is no question that better education leads to better job outcomes and higher incomes.

Stay Calm

this Christmas season Christmas is just around the corner, kids are getting excited, shops are full of gifts, and a lot of adults are getting…. well, stressed!

D

on’t get me wrong, it’s a great time of year but organising family get togethers, trips, food, presents, end of year work projects and all the extra expense puts pressure on everyone. Stress is a funny beast. As a biological response, something triggers our nervous system and we get a release of adrenaline and the stress hormone, cortisol. There’s heaps of other stuff happening biologically, but basically something happens in the world (or even just a worrying thought) and we get a kick of adrenaline and cortisol which we interpret as ‘scary’. In our caveman days it was a lifesaving response. Without it we might have been eaten by wild animals or poisoned by snakes and scary spiders. But in modern society it’s often an overreaction to perfectly normal annoyances in day-to-day life. Prolonged stress can lead to alcohol and drug abuse, and worse. Some people comfort eat, chain smoke or withdraw into themselves. Frustration and short tempers lead to increased family violence and broken relationships. If you value your health and relationships you need ways of

dealing with stress. So let me change any thoughts you might have in troubling times of “I don’t need help, I’m managing ok” into more realistic ones of, “I need to be strong and level headed enough to get through this”. And, “What can I do to help my loved ones, friends and colleagues when they’re stressed?” This simple shift of attitude will make you feel more capable, resourceful and resilient. Here’s a simple technique to overcome stress. It takes as little as five seconds, and used frequently throughout your day can be hugely beneficial. • Adopt a symmetrical body position – for one it’s more comfy, but it also helps in balancing the hemispheres of your brain which supports better thinking. • Look at the sky – look up. This accesses more visual parts of the brain as opposed to internal feelings (looking down). Gazing into the distance has many related benefits too. • Breathe slowly and deeply into your abdomen, focus on your outward breath – this relaxes your body and mind (I learned the outward breath focus at an antenatal class!).

This is a shortened version of one of the techniques in my book, How To Chill Out – Earthquake Proof Strategies For Staying Calm In Any Crisis. www.optimum-mind.com for more info. Be Sun Smart This Summer S ummer is just around the corner, and as the days get longer and warmer we all spend more time out in the sun. Now is the time to check our sunscreen supply, whether there is plenty and the expiry date.

WHY IS SUNBURN SO BAD? Sunburn can lead to melanoma and other skin cancers later in life and should be avoided. Research continues into how skin cancers are formed, and what type of UV exposure has the worst effects. Sunburn is painful and potentially deadly, so cover up to avoid getting sunburnt. Find out more about skin cancer. HOW CAN I BE SUNSMART Being SunSmart is about protecting skin and eyes from damaging UV radiation. From September to April when outdoors: Slip into a long-sleeved shirt and into the shade. Generally, fabrics with a tighter weave and darker colours will give you greater protection from the sun. Some clothing is sold with a UV radiation Protection Factor (UPF) rating. Clothing with a UPF of 50+ offers superior protection and could be an ideal choice for outdoor workers.

Slop on plenty of broad-spectrum (filters both UVA and UVB rays) sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 30. Apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before going outdoors and reapply every two hours. Reapply more frequently if sweating or swimming. Slap on a hat with a wide-brim or a cap with flaps. This will help reduce the risk of sunburn to your face, ears and neck. These are the most common places where we get sunburnt. Wrap on a pair of close-fitting sunglasses. When buying sunglasses, look for the words ‘good UV protection’ on the label or swing tag. Remember to always protect skin and eyes when you’re in the mountains, or around reflective surfaes like snow and water, when UV levels are damaging. SUNSMART MYTHS 1) I can’t get sunburnt on a cloudy day. False: You can still get sunburnt on a cloudy day. This is because UV radiation can get through light cloud cover, so unprotected skin can still be damaged. 2) Temperature gives me a good idea of the the chances of getting sunburnt. False: The heat from the sun is caused by

infrared radiation, not ultraviolet (UV) radiation. UV radiation can still be high even on a cool day, when infrared radiation is low. Just think about how easy it is to get sunburnt on the skifields when it can be very cold. 3) I’m windburnt not sunburnt. False: Your windburn is sunburn caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The wind may make you feel cooler but UV radiation can still be high even on a windy day. Just think about why you don’t get windburn if you’re out in the dark on a windy night. 4) Sunscreen blocks out all UV radiation. False: No sunscreen filters out all UV radiation – that’s why you need to limit your time in the sun no matter what sunscreen you’re using and cover up. 5) Getting badly sunburnt before the age of 20 increases my risk of getting melanoma skin cancer later on. True: If you have a history of one or more sunburns before you turn 20, research suggests you have a much higher chance of getting melanoma skin cancer as you age.

27

6) Wearing a t-shirt in the water is as sun protective as a rash shirt. False: A wet t-shirt may offer only half the protection it does when it is dry. If you are going to be in the water, a rash shirt and sunscreen is a good form of protection. A full body wetsuit gives better protection.

Device to Prevent Snoring

B

W

hy put up with broken sleep, when help is at hand with Snorex, an appliance that prevents snoring, sleep apnoea, and dry and raw throats. Snorex is custom-fitted to your mouth for comfort, and a follow up service is provided. Denise Lim has been involved with Snores for 19 years and has had a 98% success rate with people using the appliance. Snoring can be a health hazard, causing sleep apnoea, where the person actually stops breathing for short periods.

It can cause short-term memory loss, tiredness and contribute to high blood pressure. The Snorex device does not feel restrictive, is non-invasive and carries a money-back guarantee. Many people are referred by ear, nose and throat specialists, however, anyone can phone for an appointment. For an information pack or to discuss the Snorex further, phone Denise Lim on 383 0994 or check out the website www.snorex.co.nz

The Importance of Good Blood Pressure!

lood pressure is an indicator of cardiovascular as well as overall health. Healthy blood flow is vital for a healthy body as the blood plasma transports nutrients, hormones, metabolic waste, oxygen and CO2 throughout the body. An area in the brain keeps check on blood flow to ensure health of all cells and the organs they make up. If blood flow is reduced, the brain will try to normalise blood flow by adjusting the heart strength, frequency (pulse rate) as well as the width of blood vessels, all via the nervous system. Over a period of time, the blood pressure may keep increasing due to the deterioration of blood flow. A higher blood pressure is not ideal and it is considered a major risk factor for stroke, aneurysm, organ failure and heart failure. Even moderate elevation of blood pressure is considered a major reason for shorter life expectancy. If we can maintain our blood pressure in the normal range, our overall health will be improved. Systolic blood pressure, the upper figure, is when the heart contracts and pushes blood around the body. Ideally at rest, this should be between 100 to 120. The diastolic blood pressure, the lower figure, is the pressure in the arteries between beats and ideally at rest this should be between 60 to 70. It has been found in around 90 per cent of cases, high blood pressure is caused

by an increase in the resistance to blood flow in the blood vessels. It is believed inflammation and stiffness of the blood vessels are major reasons for this increased resistance. Checking our blood pressure on a regular basis allows us to adjust our diet and lifestyle and see the benefits in our blood pressure readings. Blood pressure monitors and further information on how to improve your overall health and blood pressure naturally is available from the natural health advisers at Marshall’s Health and Natural Therapy, 110 Seaview Road, New Brighton. Majestic by name…majestic in design 7 Majestic Lane, Thorrington $839,000

4 bedrooms | 2 bathrooms | 1 living room | 1 dining room | 1 office/study | 2-car garage | Listing #: BE192378

L

ocated in the heart of Thorrington down exclusive Majestic Lane, this stylish family home is definitely a must-see.
